13 Reasons Strength Training Is One of the Best Things You Can Do for Your Health

When people think about exercise, they often picture running or spending hours on a treadmill. But one of the best ways to care for the body God has given us is through strength training.

Don't let the name intimidate you. Strength training isn't just for bodybuilders or athletes. It's for anyone who wants to build strength, improve their health, and maintain an active lifestyle as they age.

I didn't start lifting weights until later in life, and I wish I had started sooner! I've discovered that becoming stronger isn't about looking a certain way—it's about having the energy and ability to serve God, care for my family, and enjoy everyday life.

"I can do all things through him who strengthens me."
Philippians 4:13 (ESV)

As we grow stronger physically, we're reminded that our greatest strength comes from Christ.

1. It Helps Build Stronger Muscles

Strength training challenges your muscles, helping them grow stronger over time. Strong muscles make everyday tasks like carrying groceries, climbing stairs, gardening, and playing with grandchildren much easier.

2. It Supports Healthy Bones

As we age, maintaining bone density becomes increasingly important, especially for women after menopause. Strength training helps support strong bones and may reduce the risk of fractures.

3. It Boosts Your Metabolism

Muscle tissue burns more energy than fat tissue, even while you're resting. Building muscle can help support a healthy metabolism as part of an overall healthy lifestyle.

4. It Makes Everyday Life Easier

Whether you're lifting laundry baskets, carrying groceries, or working in the garden, strength training helps prepare your body for the physical demands of everyday life.

5. It Supports Healthy Joints

Strong muscles help stabilize and support your joints, making everyday movement more comfortable and reducing strain during daily activities.

6. It Improves Posture and Balance

Strengthening your core and back muscles can improve posture, while stronger legs help improve balance and reduce the risk of falls.

7. It Supports Heart Health

Although many people think of cardio first, strength training also plays an important role in supporting overall cardiovascular health when combined with regular physical activity.

8. It Can Improve Your Mood

Exercise encourages your body to release natural chemicals that help improve your mood, reduce stress, and promote an overall sense of well-being.

9. It Helps You Stay Independent

One of the greatest benefits of strength training is maintaining the ability to care for yourself as you age. Being able to get up from a chair, carry groceries, and remain active allows you to continue serving others and enjoying life.

10. It May Help Reduce the Risk of Injury

A stronger body is often better equipped to handle everyday movements, helping improve stability and reducing the risk of some injuries.

11. It Encourages Healthy Aging

We naturally lose muscle as we get older. Strength training helps slow that process and allows us to remain active for many years to come.

"Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you."
Isaiah 46:4 (NIV)

God faithfully cares for us throughout every season of life, and we can honor Him by wisely caring for the bodies He has entrusted to us.

12. It Builds Confidence

There is something incredibly encouraging about realizing you can lift more weight than you could just a few weeks ago.

Progress isn't about comparing yourself to others—it's about celebrating how far you've come.

13. It Helps Us Be Better Stewards

The goal of strength training isn't to achieve the "perfect" body.

It's to faithfully care for the body God has given us so we can better serve Him and those around us.

"Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you... So glorify God in your body."
1 Corinthians 6:19–20 (ESV)

Every workout can become an act of gratitude as we steward the gift of health God has graciously given us.

Start Small

If you've never lifted weights before, don't worry.

Start with light dumbbells or resistance bands.

Focus on learning proper form before increasing the weight.

Aim for two or three strength-training sessions each week, allowing your muscles time to recover between workouts.

Remember, consistency matters far more than perfection.

Final Encouragement

Strength training isn't about becoming the strongest person in the room.

It's about becoming stronger than you were yesterday.

Every workout is an opportunity to care for your health, build strength for everyday life, and thank God for the amazing body He created.

So don't be afraid to start.

Take one step.

Lift one weight.

Celebrate one victory at a time.

With God's help, those small, faithful choices can make a big difference over time.
