5 Christian Books on Anxiety That Encouraged My Faith
Share
If you've ever struggled with anxiety, please know you're not alone.
For many years, anxiety was a daily battle in my life. My mind would race with "what if" thoughts, and before I knew it, I had convinced myself the worst was going to happen. It was exhausting.
The good news is that God never left me in those moments.
While no book can replace God's Word, there are wonderful Christian authors who point us back to the truth of Scripture and remind us where our hope is found.
If anxiety has been weighing on your heart, these are five books that have encouraged me and strengthened my faith over the years.
"Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you."
1 Peter 5:7 (ESV)
1. Anxious for Nothing by Max Lucado
If I could recommend one classic book on anxiety, this would be near the top of the list.
Max Lucado walks through Philippians 4:6–7, reminding readers that God invites us to replace worry with prayer and trust.
This book doesn't promise a life without anxiety, but it does point us toward the peace that only Christ can give.
Best for: Anyone looking for biblical encouragement rooted in Scripture.
2. Get Out of Your Head by Jennie Allen
This book made a huge impact on me.
I've completed the accompanying Bible study twice because I found it so helpful.
One of the biggest struggles I had with anxiety was allowing one fearful thought to lead to another... and another... until I had created an entire story in my mind that wasn't even true.
Jennie Allen does a wonderful job of helping readers recognize those unhealthy thought patterns and replace them with God's truth.
If you have access to RightNow Media, you can also watch the companion video series, which is an excellent addition to the study.
"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind."
Romans 12:2 (ESV)
Best for: Anyone who struggles with overthinking or negative thought spirals.
3. Winning the War in Your Mind by Craig Groeschel
Craig Groeschel explains how our thoughts influence every area of our lives.
This book helped me better understand the importance of intentionally replacing lies with truth.
Our minds are powerful, and learning to think biblically can make a tremendous difference in how we respond to difficult situations.
Best for: Readers who want practical tools for changing unhealthy thinking patterns.
4. Don't Give the Enemy a Seat at Your Table by Louie Giglio
This book challenged me in ways I didn't expect.
Louie Giglio reminds us that we don't have to entertain every fearful thought that enters our minds.
Too often we allow fear, worry, and discouragement to sit at our table when Jesus has already invited us to sit at His.
It's a powerful reminder that we have a choice about which voices we listen to.
"You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you."
Isaiah 26:3 (ESV)
Best for: Anyone who wants to strengthen their spiritual perspective during seasons of anxiety.
5. Attacking Anxiety by Shawn Johnson
I appreciated how honest Shawn Johnson is throughout this book.
He openly shares his own struggles while continually pointing readers back to God's faithfulness and truth.
Sometimes the greatest encouragement comes from knowing someone else understands what you're experiencing.
This book offers both hope and practical encouragement for anyone walking through anxiety.
Best for: Readers looking for honest, biblical encouragement from someone who has experienced anxiety firsthand.
What I've Learned About Anxiety
Over the years, I've realized something important.
Freedom from anxiety hasn't come from finding the perfect book.
It's come from spending time with Jesus.
These books have encouraged me.
They've challenged me.
They've pointed me back to Scripture.
But true peace is found in Christ alone.
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God... will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
Philippians 4:6–7 (ESV)
Final Encouragement
If anxiety is something you're facing today, I want to encourage you to keep turning to the Lord.
Spend time in His Word.
Talk to Him honestly in prayer.
Remember that you don't have to carry your burdens alone.
One of my favorite reminders is that God isn't surprised by our struggles. He walks with us through them, strengthening us day by day.
If one of these books helps you draw closer to Him, then I believe it's worth reading.
And remember...
Your anxiety does not define you. God's love does.
