How to Start a Prayer Journal and Make It a Daily Habit
Share
Have you ever had one of those days where you just felt...off?
Maybe you woke up feeling fine, but as the day went on, you became anxious, impatient, or easily frustrated. I've had days like that too.
One particular day, I skipped my normal quiet time with the Lord because I jumped straight into work. Before I knew it, it was afternoon. As I looked back on my day, I realized my attitude wasn't reflecting the love of Christ.
I knew exactly what I needed.
I needed to spend time with Jesus.
That day reminded me of something I'll never forget: I don't just need God when life is hard—I need Him every single day.
Why I Journal During My Quiet Time
Journaling has become one of my favorite parts of spending time with God.
It slows me down.
It helps me focus my prayers.
Most importantly, it gives me a place to remember God's faithfulness.
"Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you."
James 4:8 (ESV)
When we intentionally spend time with the Lord, He meets us in those quiet moments.
What My Daily Quiet Time Looks Like
There isn't one perfect way to spend time with God, but this rhythm has helped me stay consistent.
1. Begin with Prayer
Before I open my Bible, I spend a few moments talking with God.
I thank Him for His blessings.
I praise Him for who He is.
Then I bring Him my worries, my struggles, and the people I'm praying for.
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God."
Philippians 4:6 (ESV)
2. Read God's Word
One of the easiest ways to stay consistent is by following a Bible reading plan.
Knowing what you're going to read each day removes the guesswork and helps build a lasting habit.
Even if you only have a few minutes, spending time in Scripture is always worthwhile.
"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."
Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
3. Study the Bible More Deeply
After reading Scripture, I usually spend time in a Bible study or devotional.
I enjoy Bible studies because they help me understand Scripture in greater depth and encourage me to apply God's Word to my everyday life.
4. Read Christian Books
Sometimes God places a specific book on my heart.
Reading books written by trusted Christian authors has encouraged my faith and helped me continue growing spiritually.
5. Verse Map Every Day
If you've followed me for very long, you probably know that verse mapping is one of my favorite ways to study the Bible.
Verse mapping has completely changed the way I read Scripture.
Instead of quickly reading a passage and moving on, I slow down, study individual words, look at the context, and discover more about God's character.
It has helped me develop a much deeper relationship with Him through His Word.
How I Keep My Prayer Journal
My prayer journal is very simple.
I divide each page into two sections.
One side is labeled Praise.
The other side is labeled Prayer Requests.
At the top of the page, I write the date.
Every week or two, I go back through my journal and highlight every prayer God has answered.
Looking back at those highlighted prayers is one of my favorite parts of journaling.
Sometimes God answers immediately.
Sometimes He answers months later.
Sometimes His answer is different than I expected.
But every highlighted prayer reminds me that God is always faithful.
"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."
1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 (ESV)
Trust God's Timing
There are also prayers that remain unhighlighted.
Those remind me to keep trusting.
God hears every prayer.
Sometimes His answer is "yes."
Sometimes it's "wait."
Sometimes it's "I have something even better."
His timing is always perfect, even when we don't understand it.
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding."
Proverbs 3:5–6 (ESV)
My Favorite Devotionals
If you're looking for a devotional, here are two that have greatly encouraged me:
- GraceLaced and other devotionals by Ruth Chou Simons. Her writing is beautiful, biblically rich, and paired with stunning artwork.
- 100 Days to Brave by Annie F. Downs. My copy is filled with highlights and tabs because I've returned to it so many times.
Final Encouragement
Don't worry about creating the perfect quiet time.
Simply begin.
Spend a few minutes talking with God.
Read a chapter of Scripture.
Write one prayer.
Thank Him for one blessing.
Those small, faithful moments add up over time.
The goal isn't checking a box.
The goal is growing in your relationship with Jesus.
And I can promise you this—time spent with Him is never wasted.
"But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."
Matthew 6:33 (ESV)
