May the Lord Bless You and Keep You: A Prayer for the Next Generation

I am blessed to be on staff at our church and serve in children's ministry.

A few Sundays ago was Move-Up Sunday, the day when all of the children moved up to the next grade. It can be a big transition, especially for our kindergarteners, who are experiencing a new environment for the very first time.

One of my favorite things to do each Sunday is lead worship with the kids.

That morning, another volunteer and I were on stage with our hands lifted in praise. As I looked out at the children, I noticed several of the kindergarteners watching us very closely. Then, one by one, they slowly began lifting their own hands in worship.

It absolutely melted my heart.

They weren't quite sure what to expect in this new place, so they watched those around them and followed their example. Before long, they were joyfully worshiping Jesus right along with us.

It was one of the sweetest things I've witnessed in a long time.

That moment reminded me of something I never want to forget:

Children are always watching.

They watch how we worship, how we treat others, how we respond when life gets hard, and how we live out our faith. Whether you're a parent, grandparent, teacher, volunteer, or simply someone who spends time with children, your example matters.

A Blessing for the Next Generation

As I watched those little ones worship, I couldn't help but think of the song "The Blessing" by Kari Jobe and Cody Carnes.

Every time I hear it, I'm reminded that it's more than just a beautiful song—it's a prayer we can pray over our families for generations to come.

May His favor be upon you
And a thousand generations
And your family and your children
And their children, and their children.

Think about that for a moment.

One simple prayer, faithfully prayed, could impact generation after generation.

What an incredible legacy to leave.

God Is Always With Us

One of my favorite parts of the song is the reminder that God is always with us.

At the beginning of the song, Kari Jobe says that these words are the heart of the Father over His children.

What a comforting thought.

He never leaves us.

He goes before us.

He walks behind us.

He stands beside us.

He is with us through every trial and every celebration.

If God is always with us, then we don't have to live in fear.

We don't have to be consumed by worry.

God has us.

He will never leave us or forsake us.

And never forget this beautiful truth:

God is for you.

Romans 8:31 reminds us,

"If God is for us, who can be against us?"

What incredible confidence that gives us as believers.

Living Under God's Blessing

Numbers 6 tells us that the Lord will bless us and keep us.

To be blessed is to receive God's favor, His care, and His presence in our lives.

But our relationship with God can't be something we only turn to when life falls apart.

He isn't our last resort.

He is our first priority.

When we put Him first every day, we learn to rest in His faithfulness, knowing He is guiding every step we take.

The Meaning of "Amen"

Did you know that when we sing "Amen," we're agreeing with and receiving the blessing we've just prayed?

The Hebrew word amen carries the idea of truth, certainty, faithfulness, and "so be it."

Every time we sing those words, we're declaring our trust in God's promises and praying His blessing over our families—not just for today, but for generations to come.

Can you imagine the impact of families faithfully praying this blessing year after year?

A Blessing for You

"The Lord bless you and keep you;
the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you;
the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace."
— Numbers 6:24–26

My prayer is that you would know God's presence in every season of your life.

May He bless you.

May He keep you.

May He surround your family with His love and faithfulness.

And may His peace fill your heart today and for generations to come.
