When Anxiety Attacks: Finding Peace in the Presence of God
Share
We all experience times when Satan attacks, trying to fill our hearts with anxiety and fear.
For me, those moments often come when it's quiet, and I'm alone—or during worship at church.
That might sound strange, but worship is one of the most meaningful parts of the service for me. God often speaks to my heart through music, so it makes sense that Satan would try to distract me at the very moment God is speaking. His goal is to confuse us, discourage us, and keep us from experiencing the blessings God has for us.
When those anxious thoughts begin to creep in, I remind myself that they are not from God.
God is a God of peace.
I try to stop the spiral as soon as it starts by rebuking Satan and proclaiming the name of Jesus over my life.
There have been times during worship when the music is playing, my hands are lifted, and all I can say is,
"Jesus... Jesus... Jesus."
As I fix my eyes on Him instead of my fear, the anxiety begins to loosen its grip. The enemy has no power over the name of Jesus.
Satan constantly tries to pull me away from worship because he knows that's where I meet with God most deeply. He wants to distract me from hearing God's voice and experiencing His presence.
But every attack is simply another reminder that worship is worth fighting for.
Please know that I am not making light of anxiety in any way.
I know firsthand how debilitating it can be.
When my children were little, there was a season when I didn't leave my house for weeks—not even to buy groceries. Just the thought of walking out the front door made my heart race so intensely that I honestly thought I was dying.
It was one of the hardest seasons of my life.
As I've grown in my relationship with the Lord, my anxiety has still come and gone during difficult seasons. The difference now isn't that anxiety has completely disappeared.
The difference is that I've learned how to fight it.
I've learned to recognize the lies of the enemy and replace them with the truth of God's Word.
I've learned to pray instead of panic.
I've learned to cling to Jesus when fear tries to overwhelm me.
The battle isn't always easy, but I no longer fight it alone.
God is with me, and He is faithfully teaching me to walk in His peace—one step, one prayer, and one moment of trust at a time.
One of the greatest truths I've learned is that anxiety doesn't define me—Jesus does. My circumstances may change, my emotions may rise and fall, but God's character never changes. He is faithful, He is present, and He is my peace.
If you're struggling with anxiety today, I want you to know that you're not alone.
God sees you.
He loves you.
And He walks with you through every anxious moment.
Keep praying.
Keep worshiping.
Keep filling your mind with His truth.
And when anxiety whispers lies, answer it with the name that is above every name—
Jesus.
"You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in You." — Isaiah 26:3
